Fever In The Funkhouse

One of the cooler things I picked up at the WFMU Record Fair last month was a pretty common record. The Stones' 1972 US single of "Tumbling Dice." What is extraordinary about it is that they issued it in Mono. The B-Side, "Sweet Black Angel" is stereo. To do this in 1972, was probably not a self-conscious retro pose, as much as the realization that the record should be mixed to be heard through the speaker of a Delco radio on the dashboard of a Pontiac. FM radio was still optional in those days. So, aside from any geeky discussion of Mono vs. Stereo, this is in my opinion the Stones finest moment. Originally kicked around in 1969 sessions for Sticky Fingers as "Good Time Women," it was recorded and remained unfinished until the riff and the groove coalesced into "Tumbling Dice" in the sweaty basement of Keith's Chateau Villa Nellcote on the French Riviera during the sessions for Exile on Main Street. What is great about this record is pretty simple: there's the groove, the riff, and great lyrics from Jagger when he was still a credible voice. Mick is on rhythm, Keith takes the solo and Mick Taylor plays bass. The Mono mix has a more lively drum sound and more subdued background vocals.

Dig it...

Let Us Now Praise James Burton Pt. 1

In case you haven't noticed, guitar players have a special place here in Fluvile. James Burton holds an esteemed distinction among guitarists. Not only is he the quintessential sideman, but he has played with both Elvis'.

Hum Susie-Q for a bit.

It's the riff you're humming, right? James Burton wrote that. He was already a veteran of the Louisiana Hayride when he recorded it with Dale Hawkins at the ripe age of 15, before migrating to Bob Luman's band and then being snatched up by Ricky Nelson who was recording next door. Burton then went on to play on hundreds of records, mostly uncredited. We'll get to those in another post.

In the meantime, dig this...

Bob's Not There

The other night I was lucky enough to see the Dylan tribute concert at the Beacon Theater, a benefit/tribute thing that was as formless as Todd Haynes' much ballyhooed and forthcoming film I'm Not There promises to be. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see the film, I'm just not expecting much. The concert was kinda a big mess, but sprinkled with some outstanding performances by John Doe, Jim James, Dan Hicks, J. Mascis, Al Kooper, Calexico, and others. After a while, I was overcome by the feeling that I'd rather hear Dylan do these songs than the steady stream of performers that took the stage. Anyway, I've compiled a little playlist of recordings of Dylan covers: more versions of Bob Dylan done by others, I know. Somehow it's easier to take it at home. There's an endless well to choose from - literally thousands - here's a few interesting ones.

Have a good weekend.

Earl King

Hey folks, today we're gonna listen to the great Earl King - his first single on Savoy with Huey Smith on piano (as Earl Johnson), his follow-up on Specialty, where he does his best Guitar Slim imitation (King was Guitar Slim's understudy and performed convincingly as Guitar Slim to unsuspecting audiences when Slim was in a car crash and out of commission), also an early version of "Come On" as "Darling Honey Angel Child" and "Those Lonely, Lonely Nights."

Dig it and have a good weekend...

Everybody's Talkin'

Fred Neil wrote "Everybody's Talkin'" in five minutes at the end of a recording session in 1966 and recorded it immediately in a single take so he could take off and go back home to Miami. It's a great song and an unlikely standard that he probably never thought much of. It made him millions though after it was used in John Schlesinger's Midnight Cowboy (sung by Harry Nilsson) and was subsequently covered by at least a hundred other artists. Fred Neil spent the last 25 years of his life in Florida.

Ratso wasn't so lucky.
